Smile Sawdust

Hi All,
Today, We are Talking About Sawdust as
Coloured Ground Scenery.

1 / A Bit about the Manufacturing Process of LVL Pine
I have been Privlidged to have worked at a 'Laminated Veneering Lumber' Company.
This Process has Pine Logs Turned by a $10 Million Lathe
into 1/4 Inch Veneer Sheets. One Pine Log ( 8 foot Wide ) is Veneered
every 20 Seconds. (1200 Logs a Day/Breakdowns)Kilned Dried, Edged, Treated Glued,
Layered, and Cold Pressed Continuously.
The Thickness of the LVL can Range from 1 1/4 inch to 3 inch thick.
The Cold Pressed LVL Billet is 4 foot wide and Cut into 60 foot Lengths
before going into a 4 Billet Hot Press and is under pressure for 20 Minutes.
This Product has a Smooth Shiny Surface on both Sides.
After Storage the LVL is Sawn into Housing Products by the Paul Saw.

2 / The Sawdust
This Paul Saw makes the Sawdust I Use for H0scale Model Scenery Products.
The Factory is on a 280,000 sq/f Concrete slab.
The Sawdust is Clean, and Brand New.
Also the Variety of Dust to Shavings are Perfect for H0scale.
- Just for Information.
Different Saw Blades Make Different Shavings and Dusts.
So for Your Scale, Get the Shavings from Saws that Produce Your Scale Size Parts.

3 / How to Make Coloured Sawdust by Wendy
1 - 1/4 Fill A Bucket with Sawdust.
2 - Use a Jug of Water and Tip bit by bit into the Sawdust as
You Turn the Sawdust Over until just Damp.
3 - Use a Jug of Water Mixed with a Little Bit of Coloured Acrylic Paint.
4 - Mix in the Coloured Water until a Constant Colour of Sawdust Appears.
The Sawdust Soakes Up the Coloured Water.
( You hardly need any Water in the Whole Process )
5 - Now Spread the Coloured Sawdust evenly on Newspaper to Dry.
The New Scale Product Dry's Quickly on it's Own.

4 / So Check Out Your Suppliers
Look up Pine Shavings in Your Local Area.

5 / Here is a Black Coal Look

- I am using Pine because it was there.
- The Sawdust is Cheap to Buy or in Some Cases Free.
- The Finished Coloured Product Looks Good.
- All Your other Ideas Welcome.

Good Luck. Dave I

A couple of advantages of using the sawdust as opposed to real ballast granite chips would be the weight factor for one and the other would be less likely to do damage to gears etc if caught up in the wheels or drive gears

Hi All,
I see the Fabric Dye could be Better - Just Add Salt to Preserve.
Also - the Sawdust having the Paint added can Stick Together,
So As it is Drying - You just Spread it Around.
After the Coloured Product Dries,
You can Break it Down With Your Fingers,
as Small as You Like. Dave I

Sawdust ground cover.

[quote=giants;17515]Hi All,

Hi again guys and gals:

I have been making ground cover for some time using the "RITZ" dyes. I just put some water in a 4ltr ice cream bucket, add my dye, mix in the sawdust, stir until well blended, spread out on a smooth surface to let dry..

A good hot summer day speeds up the process, set a tray (I use a shallow cardboard box) out in the sun, turning the mixture occassionally until dry. I then put in plastic zip-lock bags, and keep it until I need it..

As I have my own work shop, I have an abundance of sawdust.. I can run it through a heavy screen to get the large particals out if I just want a fine mix..

It works great.
